SIIIARIII ("swarm")
immersive concept & custom, hybrid instrument design and build
remote controlled beaters; dedicated independent output per string for independent spatial placement
SIIIARIII invites the listener into a highly visceral sound experience. The immersive concert setting is built around a custom-designed, hybrid stringed instrument that is played in interaction between remote-controlled impulse mechanisms and the player fretting the notes and shaping the sound with the hands, creating dense and swarm-like patterns.
With SIIIARIII, composer Kavall deepens his exploration of spatial, pattern-based music. The concept is inspired by the composer's research into circular bellringing patterns, a technique called 'change ringing' which he explored in the bellowers of Bristol, Bath and Wells (UK). SIIIARIII translates this permutational musical approach to a playable instrument and develops it into a unique sonic landscape.
The research and development of SIIIARIII was funded by Musikfonds. SIIIARIII was selected for the SANE program 2025 (Spatial Audio Network Europe) with a residency at Effenaar, Eindhoven (NL) where the concept was developed into a fully immersive live performance in 4DSound.
SIIIARIII will be premiered and performed as part of a series of SANE live events:
10.09.2025 Effenaar, Eindhoven (NL)
05.10.2025 Festspielhaus Hellerau, Dresden (DE)
