Kavall is a Berlin based multi-instrumentalist, composer and performer of contemporary music.
His music is inspired by his interest in spaces, both as acoustic environments and as metaphorical, emotional spaces. In his compositions, he explores the transition between the physical and the metaphorical space by melting acoustic instruments with their processed and interpreted layers. When they reunite in moving air, they translate the metaphorical quality into the physical world.
Being trained as a professional guitar player impacts on his compositions and his approach to sound. While his dedication to rich harmonic structures is rooted in his studies in Jazz Guitar, being an expressiv genre-bending guitar player formed his approach to sound, regarding sound as something to be formed with the hands, something to be released into the surroundings through a physical action. Taking this approach further and deepening his interest in stringed instruments as precise and expressive, playable interfaces, his self-designed instruments allow him to create yet unheard timbres, combining harmonic, textural and percussive characteristics.
The immersive textures, circular patterns and clustering overtones in his compositions create space for the listener to dwell and for imagery to arise. A form of sonic pareidolia, a state of perception that Kavall is engaging with in an embodied research.
His often interdisciplinary work includes site-specific music compositions and performances, scores for contemporary dance, screendance and theater, audiovisual pieces and commissioned compositions for movies, brand films and TV commercials.
